갓 태어난 아기 강아지를 보았을 때, 문득 저녁 노을을 마주한 순간, 용기가 넘치는 이야기나 아름다운 이야기를 들었을 때, 길가에 홀로 핀 꽃을 보았을 때, 혹은 새로운 사랑이 시작되는 순간 등이 우리를 설레이게 한다.
또한 처음 경험하는 것들이 우리를 설레게 한다. “첫”자로 시작하는 단어들… 첫날, 첫눈, 첫인상, 첫사랑, 첫발걸음, 첫키스, 등이 그렇게 설레이는 만큼 또한 소중한 기억으로 남는다.
어떤 아름다운 음악과의 첫만남도 우리를 설레게 한다. 그것은 낮선 사람과의 만남과 비슷하다. 처음엔 그 곡의 특성에 호감을 느끼게 되어 melody나 harmony에 매료된다. 그 관심이 자라나서 더 알고 싶어지고, 더 듣고 싶어진다. 그렇게 해서 점점 곡을 이해하게 되고, 공감하게 되어, 감정의 이입이 조금씩 가능하게 된다. 이후로는 그 곡이 더 친숙해지고, 편안한 친근감을 느끼게 되며, 마침내 그 곡을 아주 좋아하게 된다. 그런 음악과의 첫만남 역시 우리를 설레이게 하는 정말 특별하고 소중한 경험이다.
엊그제 우연한 기회에 YouTube에서 피아노 곡 하나를 만났다. 그 곡은 정말 특별했다. 혼자서 가만히 들을 때엔 행복한 감정에 눈물이 나기도 했다. 가슴을 뭉클하게 하는 풍부한 감정은 차분하지만 슬프지 않고 화려하지만 허영되지 않다. 마치 창을 통해 불어오는, 갓 피어나는 꽃들의 향기을 품은 봄바람 같다.
이 곡은 18세기의 후기 Baroque 작곡가인 프랑스의 Jean-Philippe Rameau의 마지막 오페라인 ‘Les Boréades’의 4개의 인터루드 (interlude) 중 하나인데 pianist Vikingur Olaffson이 피아노곡으로 편곡했다 (transcribed). 이 Opera는 그리스의 전설을 바탕으로 한 이야기인데 이 곡 (interlude)의 원제목은 “The Arrival of the Muses, Zephyrs, Seasons, Hours and the Arts.”이다. Vikingur Olaffson은 자신의 편곡에 ‘예술과 시간 (The Arts and the Hours)’이라는 제목을 달았다. 물론 지금 우리가 듣는 이 피아노곡은 Olaffson이 현대적 감각으로 편곡한 것이지만 원곡 자체도 그 시절, Baroque 시대를 훌쩍 앞서 가는 혁신적인 것으로 들린다. 풍부한 화음이 마치 Mahler가 19세기에 쓴 곡을 듣는 느낌이다.

The moments that make our hearts flutter are truly diverse. Whether it’s seeing a newborn puppy, suddenly encountering the evening sunset, hearing a story filled with courage or beauty, discovering a flower blooming by the roadside, or experiencing the start of a new love, each instance fills us with excitement.
The things that bring inspiration and happiness in life are often the simplest ones. Words that begin with “first” often evoke those feelings of excitement—first day, first impression, first love, first steps, first kiss—they all leave cherished memories.
The first encounter with music also fills us with excitement. Meeting beautiful music is similar to meeting a person. At first, we are drawn to the characteristics of the piece, whether it’s the melody or harmony. Our interest grows, and we want to learn more, to listen more. Gradually, we understand the music more deeply, empathize with it, allowing ourselves to be emotionally moved. Eventually, the piece becomes familiar, comforting, and we come to love it dearly. Such initial encounters with music are truly special and precious experiences that leave us feeling exhilarated.
Just the other day, I stumbled upon a piano piece on YouTube by chance. That piece was truly exceptional. When I listened to it alone, tears of happiness welled up in my eyes. The rich emotions it evoked were calm yet not sad, bright yet not vain, reminiscent of the scent of freshly blooming flowers carried by a gentle spring breeze.
This piece is one of the four interludes from “Les Boréades,” the final opera by the late Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau from 18th-century France. Pianist Víkingur Ólafsson transcribed it for piano. The original title of this opera interlude, based on Greek mythology, is “The Arrival of the Muses, Zephyrs, Seasons, Hours and the Arts.” Ólafsson titled his arrangement “The Arts and the Hours.” This piece appears to be innovative, ahead of its time. Its rich harmonies evoke a feeling akin to listening to a piece composed by Mahler in the 19th century.
